Monitoring of vegetation formations of Mato Grosso State by integrating maps obtained from TM and MODIS images
Abstract
The objective of this paper is to show the land cover changes observed in Mato Grosso State during 2002 to 2004. Methods were based on integration of TM and MODIS-based land cover maps with a 1:250,000 original vegetation cover map produced by RADAMBRASIL (1980) project. Results showed that Rainforest-to-Seasonal Forest ecotone and Seasonal Forest had an annual conversion rate near of 15%. Another important result is that the class Área Antropizada-II (represented by agricultural area - mainly soybean crop) increased by almost 30% (1.2 millions ha). These results confirm the presence of land cover process characterized by conversions of large areas of vegetations formations to antrophic areas in a short time. This conversion pattern evidences the urge for immediate environmental conservation plans and actions. Key words: Land cover mapping. Land cover change. Remote sensing. GIS.Downloads
