Abstract

In the 1970s, through development plans, the production of commodities was promoted in the Brazilian territory, one of them was soybean, which was widely disseminated and started to have more and more space in the crops of the state of Santa Catarina through the process of agricultural modernization. This article presents an analysis of the spatial dynamics of soybean farming in western Santa Catarina in the last four decades. It was observed that soy production has been gaining prominence in the rural areas of the region, advancing over areas of other agricultural crops (especially replacing corn) and in other types of land uses. The press media had an important role in the development of this dynamic, shaping ideals and discourses in favor of soybean production.
