Uses of surface water resources in the Hydrographic Circumscription of the Surroundings of the Furnas Reservoir

Abstract

The pressure for the use of surface water in Brazil has intensified as a result of growing demands, leading to conflicts over the use of this resource. The Furnas hydroelectric plant reservoir, located in the south of the state of Minas Gerais and the scene of intense changes of the regional landscape, as well as in the local production chain, is part of this context. The aim of this study is to understand the spatio-temporal dynamics of surface water concessions granted between 2001 and 2020 in the Hydrographic District Surrounding the Furnas Reservoir. The results show that there is a growing demand for the use of surface water resources, mainly in the irrigation and mineral extraction sectors. Therefore, it is important to know the spatio-temporal dynamics of surface water concessions, in order to identify the areas that put pressure on the use of water resources, as well as the user segments that excel in the use of water, seeking to resolve conflicts and guarantee water availability, supporting the management of water resources by state and federal basin committees.
