Geopolitics, Modernism and City Image Potencialities and Limits of the Touristic Patrimony of the Brazilian Federal District

Abstract

The Brazilian Federal District and its surroundings harbor a number of points of interest for tourism, particularly the valued modernist patrimony of the Pilot Plan. These qualities, however, do not seem to suffice to avoid the modest role of the capital in Brazilian tourism. One of the causes of this discrepancy could be the contradictory image of the city. For visitors of the TV Tower, the word Brasilia recalls two main types of references: the political and geopolitical, and those relative to the city’s character or spirit. In spite of the fact that the capital’s main power of attraction derives from its political role, other attractions are also valued, especially its cultural and environmental patrimony. These characteristics are to be preserved and valued in tourism planning in the city. Key-words: Federal District of Brazil; Brasilia; tourism; city image; environmental perception.
