Brownfields and refunctionalizations: an analysis of the Boyes factory in Piracicaba, SP
Abstract
This article aims to analyze the impacts of brownfields: old industrial buildings that have lost their functions due to the emergence of new spatial dynamics, taking as a point of analysis the process of productive restructuring.. The abandonment of these factory structures generates social problems such as; lack of security, unhealthy conditions, degradation of historical heritage. Brownfields can be refunctionalized and begin to house other activities, gaining new functions, becoming a solution for new economic dynamics. The refunctionalization process must be carried out responsibly, respecting the architectural and historical characteristics of the site, without demolition or defacement. The spatial outline of this text discusses the proposal for the refunctionalization of the old Boyes fabric factory, located in the city of Piracicaba, SP, dating back to 1873. The refunctionalization proposal called Boulevard Boyes raises a series of doubts about the building's deterioration and possible impacts. development, such as spatial segregation, real estate speculation and gentrification, discussed throughout the text.
