This paper presents information about the environment obtained by means of the physiographic compartimentation on a Landsat 7 ETM+ image, to contribute for the territorial planning of the city of Cananéia, in the southern coast of the São Paulo State. The physiographic compartments were identified from different hierarchic classification levels using the analysis of relief and drainage textural elements on the image; the data were associated to the pre-existent geologic and geomorphologic information, and with field checking. The final product, the map of Basic Units of Compartimentation (BUCs) may be used to guide the process of urban expansion. This methodology revealed potentiality
for other applications in environmental studies, with the adequate selection of criteria for each case.
