Abstract
Since long times superficial lateritic and colluvial deposits have been mined in the Diamantina region (Minas Gerais) and are studied concerning their morphological, chemical and mineralogical characteristics. Lateritic deposits are genetically associated with the Pós- Gondwana erosional level, developed within Upper Cretaceous-Paleocene times (1,250-1,350 meters), which is economically important at the vicinities of the Datas town. Colluvial deposits were dated by the thermoluminescence method on quartz in ca. 30,000 BP (Upper Pleistocene), being largely distributed on the same highlands. Although occurring at similar heights, both deposits were probably developed by distinct geologic processes at different times.
