Penalty kick analysis is an important strategy for understanding and facilitating the development of coaching methods. The purpose of this study was to analyze the anticipation of movements by goalkeepers during penalty kicks and to verify if there is any relationship between their anticipation time and missed penalty kicks. We analyzed 110 penalty kicks recorded on VHS videotape using the following variables both with or without anticipation: penalty kick resulting in score, defended, missed, anticipation time, and style of defense (jump away – JW, move ahead and away - MWA or move ahead followed by jump away - MAW/JW). We concluded that goalkeepers who anticipate their movements for defense increased the chances of preventing a score. The anticipation movement was JW, which occurred around 167 ms before the player kicked the ball.Downloads
